EVERY time an issue is raised concerning women, it catches my attention immediately. Naturally, I am passionate about women issues especially our rights and gender equality.

What brings tears to my eyes is that compared to other issues, those affecting women are not given as much coverage and attention as they deserve. For example politics, sports and entertainment, which is ironic.

Women play a very important role in society, Can you imagine a world without a woman even for a day. I cannot.

Today is Women’s Day, and as we celebrate this great heroic human being, let us also take a moment to think about women’s needs and what each one of us can do to make the world a better place for her. Let us take a moment to think about the young girls who are daily raped and left with a future filled with uncertainty.

The women who quietly have to endure domestic violence in their homes and still continue to disguise their pain with a forced smile because they are afraid to speak out, the women in maternity wards without beds who have to resort to the dirty, filthy, unhealthy hospital floor with their precious new born babies, and the women who die everyday during childbirth.

This notwithstanding, there are people out there and non-governmental organisations in Uganda who continue to give a helping hand to improve women’s lives in our country. Your efforts are deeply appreciated.

Let me take this opportunity to remind everyone that we should not wait for Women’s Day which comes once a year to talk about women’s problems and to look for solutions because one day in a year is just not enough. Women deserve better than that.

We should dedicate every single day to fight for women’s rights.

I salute all you wonderful, strong fearless women out there and I want to tell you that you are beautiful in every single way. Go out there and discover yourself no matter what your circumstances may be. Know that fear and faith do not abide. Plant your feet firmly in faith. You are heroines.
