Q: I am stuck and confused about my academic papers. I sat UACE in 2009, but got one principal pass. What do I do? Anonymous
A: Baker Balunywa, the Joint Admissions Board coordinator in the education ministry, says you would apply for a diploma if that one principal pass is in sciences. According to him, admission for science-based diploma courses requires students to have at least one principal pass and two subsidiaries.
However, if you studied arts subjects, you only have to begin with a certificate and upgrade later. This is because admission for arts-based diplomas requires at least two principal passes. Alternatively, you could apply for a degree or diploma programme through the mature age entry scheme if you are aged 25 years and above. Q: I did sciences in A’level and got 2 subsidiaries. I refused to repeat. Can I use my O’level results (28) for a course in accountancy? Ritah
A: Christine Kikome, an official at the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda, says you can use the O’level certificate to gain admission to an Accounting Technician Certificate (ACT) course, which is equivalent to a diploma.
Only students who got five credits in O’level, including mathematics and English, are eligible. Kikome says they admit students who scored between Grade One and Three in the Uganda Certificate of Education examinations.
Q: I hold a diploma in business administration from Uganda Catholic Social Training Centre, Rubaga. I am a civil servant working as a town agent, but I want to change my career.
I feel that my calling is accounting. Do I qualify for a CPA course? What other professional courses am I eligible for? A.L
A: Kikome says students with diplomas in business administration are eligible for admission to the CPA course if the diploma is from an accredited institution.
However, Uganda Catholic Social Training Centre, Rubaga, is not on the recent list of accredited higher education institutions provided by the National Council for Higher Education.
You need to crosscheck with the council. Kikome says the other professional course — Accounting Technician Certificate — is not suitable for you since it is an equivalent of a diploma. Q: I have applied for a degree in human resource management, but I am not sure of what jobs this can get me! Anonymous
A: A senior official of Makerere University directorate of human resources says human resources (HR) management is a marketable course.
According to her, the course trains students about how to handle people and administrative work. She explains that fresh graduates can work as personnel assistants/officers in any organisation.
These are in charge of collecting information about employees and continuously updating their records. They also work as HR officers, managers and directors depending on the size of the organisation.
