Radio West launches cultural competitions

RADIO West fans in Ntungamo and Rukungiri districts flocked Kyamate grounds in Ntungamo municipality for the launch of the western cultural traditional dance competition for this year.

The function, which was held on Friday, was dubbed ‘Ekitaguriro kya Radio West’.

Last year, TV West, Radio West and Orumuri newspaper organised a successful event in which they mobilised the community to come together through traditional music, dance and drama competitions.

The event is meant to revive and promote the area’s cultural values. This year’s competition will attract 16 districts from western Uganda.

The event for Kabale, Kisoro and Kanungu districts will be held at Kabale grounds in Kabale town on March 11.

Bushenyi, Mitooma, Buhweju, Sheema and Rubirizi districts will have their competitions at Kizinda playgrounds in Ishaka municipality on March 18.

Events for Kiruhura, Lyantonde, Ibanda and Kamwenge districts will be held at Kazo playgrounds in Kiruhura on March 25. Competitions for Mbarara and Isingiro will be held at Mbarara Independence Park in Mbarara municipality on April 1. At the event in Ntungamo, seven groups participated. Kyehinde Traditional Group emerged the winner with 249 points. They received a cash prize of sh150,000.

Ngoma Cultural Troupe came second with 240 points and got sh100,000.

Alex Mugarura, the Radio West sales and marketing officer, said the two winners from the 16 districts would perform in the grand finale at the radio’s 12th anniversary due in May this year in Bushenyi district.
