SANYU Baby’s Home requires sh10m to buy medicines and vaccines to fight a pneumonia outbreak that has already claimed two children in the home.

The Home administrator, Barbra Mutagubya, said the home was unable to purchase the required drugs and vaccines because it depended on donor funding and public generosity.

She blamed the death of the two children, only identified as Mercy and Elijah, on drug shortage in the country.

Mutagubya said the pneumonia outbreak had also been a result of the prolonged drought and unpredictable weather conditions.

She said the children were affected because their immune systems were weak and could not withstand the harsh conditions that they lived in before they were brought to the home.

Mutagubya also cited private importation of drugs as one of the causes of exorbitant prices which has made it difficult for the home to acquire them.

She told New Vision that all the children admitted at Mengo Hospital last week, except one, had been discharged.

“The majority of the children were admitted due to respiratory problems resulting from pneumonia, which required them to be provided with oxygen yet the home lacked such facilities,” Mutagubya said.

Meanwhile, the home confirmed signing an agreement with Laborex Uganda for the provision of pneumonia vaccines that were urgently required to save the lives of the babies.

Matagubya said the sh10m required would be used to purchase drugs and immunise the babies.

She appealed to all well-wishers to donate funds towards the support of the children.

The home hopes to use whatever resources they can get to vaccinate the children by Friday, Mutagubya said.
