A total of 601 women were screened for breast and cervical cancer in Kagadi hospital in Kibaale district.

The exercise that took place between March 10 and March 12 was conducted by the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from Mulago Hospital in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kibaale.

“The exercise is aimed at promoting maternal health among women between 25 and 60 years of age,” said Dr. Dinah Amongin, who led a team of the five doctors.

Amongin said 1,093 women were registered for screening but given the number of doctors available, they only managed to attend to 601 women.

“The women who turned up for screening were over 3,000 but we only registered 1,093 but we never attended to all of them,” she said.

She said of those screened, 36 women tested positive for human papilloma virus (HPV), the virus that causes cancer.

“This is a high number. Basing on the number of women screened, this stands at between 6-8%,” said Amongin.

Speaking from Kagadi Hospital on Saturday, Amongin said they were overwhelmed by the number of women who turned up for the screening.

The cancer camp was sponsored by United Nations Fund for Population Agency-UNFPA and the American Refugee Council.

The camp was in line with this year’s international Women’s Day.

Amongin, however, said they could not conduct another cancer screening exercise due to lack of funds.
