PEOPLE implicated in illegal fishing should be sentenced to a jail term of not less than one year, the chairperson of Ggaba Beach Management Unit, Hassan Senoga has advised.
He told the New Vision that the law in place was too lenient and this had resulted into the decline of fish stocks in the lakes and rivers.
The Fisheries Act should be strengthened to ensure Uganda’s lakes regained fish stocks to boost the fish exporting industry, Senoga said.
According to the current law a culprit implicated in illicit fishing is charged sh5,000.
Once considered, a jail term of not less than one year will act as a deterrent against illegal fishing, Senoga noted.
The most rampant illegal fishing activities include: use of undersized nets, use of the beach seine method (kokota) for indiscriminate fishing, use of poison to catch fish, and hammering the water with flat pieces of wood to chase the fish towards the nets.
There is also criminality like armed
robbery on the lake.
Poor sanitation and lack of toilets has also led to water contamination
