WE have all watched movies where guys bet on who will sleep with a naive girl who is playing hard to get. Usually, such films have ended with the guy falling in love with the girl, she forgives him and they live happily ever after.

WE have all watched movies where guys bet on who will sleep with a naive girl who is playing hard to get. Usually, such films have ended with the guy falling in love with the girl, she forgives him and they live happily ever after.
Unfortunately, in the real world, life is cruel. When men bet on a woman and she finds out, there is no living happily ever after.
Elena was the ideal description of purity. She had planned to remain a virgin until marriage. However, when she met Eric, everything changed. He would call her at least three times a day, take for her lunch and even warned her about the bad boys around campus who wanted to break her fragile heart.
He shared with her his future plans and said she wanted her to be his future wife.
Eric even told her he had never loved a woman that much. Elena was swept off her feet and she slept with him.
Before day break, word about how the innocent Elena had been conquered was being shared by the boys in the hostel. She later discovered that she was the victim of a bet and Eric had won sh50,000. A cheap price for her purity!
We wonder what planet men like Eric come from, but they live among us. Their only mission in their sorry lives is to seek out, chase and conquer women who seem to be off limits.
To these men, the women are just like football; When the 90 minutes are done, they either emerge as winners or losers.
Well, you may dismiss it as a childish game, but such bets also happen in the corporate world. Mature men, who wear suits and neckties, bet on women just to pass time.
Irene was considering a serious relationship with a workmate. She had been to his place several times but had not slept with him. Fortunately for her, she was tipped off by a concerned colleague.
“One of my workmates warned me. He said he had heard the men dare someone to sleep with me because they thought I was pretending to be Born-again,†she said.
It gets worse it comes to female employees. The men become like lions competing for the only antelope in the jungle.
“Most ladies get carried away when they are new at a workplace, because most of the guys seem to want them, yet most of the time, it is a case of who will have her first†says Elias, an accountant.

WHY DO MEN BET?
Although there is usually money at stake, most men do not do it for the money. They are driven by the desire to prove to the people around them that they are real men.
Sorry to disappoint you, but betting on a woman does not make you a real man. I have never attended a funeral where the number of women a man has conquered is listed as part of his achievements.
Men hate what they cannot conquer. The moment they realise they cannot get a girl, they do everything in their power to make sure they triumph over her. It does not matter if it is a friend who does it.
“Some girls are too proud. They act like no one is good enough for them. You cannot blame a guy for taking up such a challenge,†says Michael a businessman.
When a girl is hard to get, you call her proud, when she is easy, you call her a slut. You cannot treat a woman like a sport, she has emotions.
“You cannot blame the guy who takes on the bet, you blame the guys who dare him to get the girl, and after all, earning an extra buck has never been a bad idea,†argues Emmanuel, an architect.

“When guys feel belittled by a lady before fellow boys, the only way to get respect is to win over the lady at all costs,†says Moses Odongo, a communications officer.
He adds that, when a bet is made, his commitment to earning back his respect becomes stronger because he has a point to prove.

“If I discover that it was a bet but my man is serious with the relationship, I would stay with him,†says Fiona, a banker.
