THE Government has issued new rates for trade licences in Kampala, putting an end to the battle between Kampala City Council (KCC) and the business community over illegal charges.
Last year, the Kampala City Traders’ Association (KACITA) petitioned Parliament seeking a probe into the legality of the trade licence fees levied by KCC prior to the enactment of the Trade Licensing Amendment Act.
The traders’ plea was prompted by KCC’s doubling of the fees, claiming that the rates reflected in the Act did not match the current economic value.
The trade Act then required wholesale traders to pay from sh60,000 to sh100,000, and retail traders sh20,000 to sh35,000.
However, KCC had hiked the fees to range from sh360,000 to sh950,000.
According to the amendments, wholesalers will now be required to pay licence fees between sh60,000 and sh320,000, while retailers will pay half of the fees.
The Act also mandates KCC to levy licences against businesses under the service sector.
These include legal firms, auditors, fumigation, events management, security, banks, money lenders and ATM machines.
