To Haandi, for the food, I will return

ONE thing our visit to Haandi Restaurant on Commercial Plaza, Kampala Road, reminded me of was this: I really love Indian food.

It is odd that this realisation should come in this way, considering how often I eat Indian in the course of this job — always in and out of exotic restaurants — but even though I have eaten a good meal of Indian in other places, it has been a while since I was so thoroughly pleased by the food as I was on Tuesday. It was a meal that ranks among the top ten.

Haandi is not as pricey as I had thought it would be, even though it is very plush and elegant. The afternoon sky was overcast, but that is not what made the light inside muted and calm.

There was background music of a genre I could not easily discern (trumpets and strings doing something inconspicuous) and an atmosphere of rich elegance.

We sat at the edge of the restaurant, by the windows overlooking Kampala Road — that is where the tables for two are laid — and I noted that this sort of restaurant deserves a better view than the hideous Plaza House.

The waiter did not dilly-dally and was prompt. I cannot say the service was exemplary, though it was not poor. The waiter did not perform above and beyond the call of duty… he took our order and brought our food promptly, no extra mile, so I didn’t feel bad not leaving a heavy tip.

The best thing about the experience remained the food. My roganjosh with nan was heavenly and my guest’s meal of chicken chetinad had delightful coconut tones. All for sh51,000 plus drinks. I am definitely going back.
