THE United Nations Human Rights Council has re-appointed Uganda’s Margaret Ssekaggya as the special rapporteur for human rights defenders for another three years.

Ssekaggya’s re-appointment was announced in a statement issued on March 24, in Geneva by the human rights council.

The resolution renewing the mandate was adopted by consensus following negotiations led by Norway, which is a member of the council. Uganda was also among the countries that co-sponsored the resolution.

A former head of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Sekaggya has held the position of special rapporteur for human rights defenders for the past three years.

She is charged with protecting human rights defenders, both individuals and groups who promote and strive for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
