Cricket team flies out for Dubai tourney

NATIONAL cricket coach Martin Suji has promised to build on Uganda’s bowling and fielding strengths so that the team qualifies for the Inter Continental Cup.
Uganda needs to finish among the top two in the Division II World Cricket League that starts on Friday in the United Arab Emirates, to qualify for the Intercontinental Cup. Previously, the Uganda team has been taking part in the Intercontinental Shield.
A team of 14 players and four officials flew out yesterday for United Arab Emirates, where the one week tournament will take place.
They were flagged off by National Council of Sports general secretary Jasper Aligawesa, who also offered the team $2,000 (sh4.6m) towards their upkeep while in Dubai.
Suji played down history that Uganda has always fallen to Namibia and UAE, the most recent being in the inter-continental shield when they failed to reach the finals.
“There is a big difference between a three-day game and a one day game. The biggest element is the mental approach and we are ready for the tournament,†he said.
“Our strength is in the bowling and fielding. We have also been working on the batting but we will use our strengths to help us soar,†said Suji. He will be joined by South African Conrad Shukri in the team’s technical wing.
Justine Ligyalingi travelled as the team manager while Vivian Namata is the team physio.
