THE Police boss, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has warned the public against illegal demonstrations.

In a press statement issued on Friday, Kayihura said the Police had received information that some politicians were again planning to engage in unlawful demonstrations.

“They are planning to walk from different directions in the suburbs of the city in the hope of gathering crowds on the way, blocking roads and highways.

This desperate move is after their previous mobilisation attempts were shunned by the population. In the event that Police blocks them, they will attack the Police sparking off an orgy of destruction,” Kayihura disclosed.

He said the protests were likely to become criminal because of the intentions of the organisers.

Kayihura said the intention was to create riotous situations with the potential of generating civil unrest.
“We wish to caution, in particular the youth, to avoid being misled by selfish individuals who do not have anything to lose if the country goes up in flames, ” he said.

The Police, he added, has always acted with restraint in face of impunity and provocation as exhibited recently in the handling of former presidential candidates Dr Olara Otunnu (UPC) and Samuel Lubega (Independent).

Kayihura, however, warned the public not to mistake the Police restraint for weakness.

But UPC secretary general Fred Bbosa said it was a constitutional right for people to express themselves by peacefully marching around with posters or placards to express their dissatisfaction about certain government policies they dislike.

He urged Kayihura not to break the law by reigning down on peaceful demonstrators.
