LOGIC suggests that Uganda’s mental approach to their opening ICC Division II World Cricket League encounter against Hong Kong should be similar to a survivor’s.
That is, making the most of every opportunity.
Every known fact – not least the One Day ICC world rankings – points to a close affair playing out at the GCA2 Academy Oval in Dubai. Ranked 20th, Uganda could not be closer to Hong Kong, who are right on their heels.
Put differently, this is the kind of game that is won on the pitch.
Uganda co-coach Martin Suji has long maintained that it will be down to composure for his troops. Whilst the players have been granted the “freedom to express themselves,†Suji believes the key will be in “sticking to the basicsâ€.
This inevitably thrusts the chunk of the responsibility on the shoulders of Uganda’s most experienced heads, led by captain Akbar Baig, Benjamin Musoke, Frank Nsubuga, Davis Arinaitwe Lawrence Ssematimba and Raymond Otim.
Uganda has a very youthful side and the hazardous nature of the cricket means this tournament will partly be a learning curve for many of the players.
Trouble is, there is not much room for error since Uganda are aiming to finish in the top two of the six-team tournament.
Hosts United Arab Emirates take on fellow favourites Namibia in the match of the day while Bermuda play PNG.
