THE Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE) will de-register engineers who perform sub-standard work, leading to collapse of buildings.

Jamidu Ssentamu, the UIPE chairperson of the Jinja branch, made the warning while on a tour of Bujagali Hydro power station on Saturday.

UIPE engineers from Jinja toured the power station under construction to ascertain the progress at the site.

Ssentamu said engineers who taint the profession by doing shoddy would not be entertained.

He said engineers have a code of conduct to follow and urged the public to guard against fake engineers.

“UIPE is working out a policy of registering all engineers so as to get rid of fake ones,” Ssentamu said.

He called upon engineers who have not yet registered with UIPE to do so in order to build a better nation.

He commended Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL) for the construction works at Bujagali Hydropower project which he said were on schedule.

During the tour, the engineers who were taken around the dam by Josh Gerrard, the BEL resident engineer, commended the project saying the community had benefited from it.

Gerard said the first unit to produce 50MW of electricity will be completed in October this year and will immediately start generating power.

He said the project employs 2,500 people and about 100 are engineers at various levels.
