THE Government has not committed to whether it will take over full responsibility for the debts uganda telecom owes several service providers since it took over its management about a week ago.

Aggrey Awori, the information, communication and technology minister, said a new board headed by Dr. Ben Mbonye had been installed and will look into the matter.

“We are not assuming any financial responsibility especially on the liabilities. We will initiate a small audit then we will see the way forward,” said Awori on Friday.

MTN is claiming sh20b from utl in interconnection fees.

Meanwhile, Donald Nyakairu, the former chief legal and corporate officer, becomes the chief executive officer in an acting capacity. “The Libyans are out,” said Awori.

The minister said the full position of the company would be ascertained within 30 days. But MTN chief Themba Khumalo said they were in touch with the Government.

He noted that prior to the takeover by the Government, they had signed up some agreements and reconciled the debt figures.

“The Government cannot run away from the liability of the company because the company is still running,” said Khumalo.

Khumalo said MTN and utl were working on how to clear the debt.

The Government seized control of Libya’s stake in utl to comply with the UN sanctions.
