Baker Balunywa, the Joint Admissions Board coordinator in the education ministry says students need to have at least two principal passes to be admitted on any degree programme at university.

Since you had only one pass, you could not be admitted. You can begin with a certificate and upgrade later. This is because admission for arts-based diplomas requires at least two principal passes.

According to Balunywa, it is only in science-based diplomas that students with one principal pass and two subsidiaries are allowed. Alternatively, you could apply for a degree or diploma programme through the mature age entry scheme if you are aged 25 and above.

If someone does history economics, divinity and literature, what course can they be given at university?
Lillian

ANSWER One can qualify for many arts courses if they pass A’ level well. These courses include: education, social sciences, law, mass communication, development studies, and library and information management to mention a few. With good points, the choice of the course becomes even simpler.

I completed A’ level in 2004 and scored DBEE and C5 in history, economics, geography, divinity and general paper respectively. Will this enable me join any recognised university in Uganda?

I would like to do Bachelor of Business Administration or Industrial and organisational psychology? Please help. I am aged 29 and hold a diploma from Datapro Business Institute.
Vincent

You got four principal passes yet the minimum requirement for admission at university is two principal passes. This means you are eligible for a number of arts courses.

Economics is the essential subject for BBA at almost all universities including Makerere and Makerere University Business School. Since you scored B in economics, it means you qualify for Bachelor of Business Administration.

According to Ritah Namisango, the Makerere University’s spokesperson, you are also eligible for admission to industrial and organisational psychology since it has no specific essential subjects.

I need to do a bachelor’s degree in public health at another university but would like to do bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery later at Makerere University. Will I qualify for that after my first degree?
Daniel

Makerere University offers three different avenues of admission. The first is the direct entry scheme for A’ level leavers, the diploma scheme for diploma holders and the mature age entry scheme for those aged 25 years and above.

According to the university spokesperson Ritah Namisango, doing your first degree at another university cannot disqualify you from being admitted. She says you can use your A’ level certificate and apply for bachelor of medicine and surgery even after doing public health. But this will only happen if you studied the subjects essential for medicine-biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.

In 2003, I scored DDEO/3 in history, economics, geography, divinity and general paper respectively but failed to get fees to join university then. I am 35 now. What can I do?
Bernard

AThe grades you scored qualify you for admission to various bachelor’s degree courses in any Ugandan university because you got three principal passes.

Yet the minimum points required are two. And, at 35 years, you are not too old to resume studies. You can apply to any university, through the mature age entry schemes. However, if you still do not have the money to pay for tuition, you better look for scholarships. There are various Non governmental organisations and embassies which give scholarships to needy students.

I got 15 points in History, Economics, Divinty and Luganda at A’ level. My best done subjects were history and Luganda. Is it possible to do law, education, or computer science at Makerere University?
Kaggwa

At Makerere University, admission for law and education is open to all subjects offered at A’ level as long as the student got at least two principal passes. The 15 points you got imply that you scored the required two principal passes, which means you are eligible for admission.

However, you may not qualify for computer science because you took only one of its essential subjects. The essential subjects for Makerere’s Bachelor of Computer Sciences include: mathematics, economics, physics, biology, agriculture, technical drawing and food and nutrition.
