IT was an evening to remember last Thursday at the Mehta group exhibition hall at the UMA show grounds as diplomats, government officials, business executives and skimply-dressed models rubbed shoulders to launch the first of a kind Kampala carnival.

If you have had an opportunity to watch the famous Brazilian carnival or the fast rising Trinidad and Tobago carnival, you probably have an idea of the glitz, glamour, happiness and fun that comes with it.

The Ugandan carnival is scheduled to start on July 29 and 30 at Kololo Airstrip and move around the city and back to the airstrip where the grand finale party will be held to crown it all off.

Apparently, carnivals are known to promote culture through exhibitions and boost tourism and relations between countries.

The evening began with a few brief formalities as guests were ushered into the venue to brief remarks by tourism state minister Serapio Rukundo after which guests were taken around the hall to view some of the costumes and masks that will be worn come D-day.

After the brief tour of the hall, the bar and kitchen were officially opened as guests drowned in all sorts of drinks till late in the night.

The Kampala carnival is slated to become an annual event after its maiden show in July with the 2012 version being a much bigger one thanks to the fact that the co-organising countries, Uganda and its counterpart Trinidad and Tobago, will be celebrating their 50th independence anniversaries.
