‘Kings of Comedy’ back on stage

STAND-UP and Sketch comedy come to these series of shows to prove one thing: comedy has entered the realm of popular entertainment. It is the Kings of Comedy shows which kick off on Wednesday through to Good Friday at Theatre La Bonita.

STAND-UP and Sketch comedy come to these series of shows to prove one thing: comedy has entered the realm of popular entertainment. It is the Kings of Comedy shows which kick off on Wednesday through to Good Friday at Theatre La Bonita.
Entrance is sh25,000 for VIP tickets and sh20,000 for ordinary ones.
Although these are self-declared “kingsâ€, the show gives a general profile of what the comedy industry holds for Ugandans. The show is produced by The Crackers at their own home, Theatre La Bonita. The posters advertising the shows provide the first joke. The posters announce that the show will feature two comedy groups, Fun Factory and Amarula Family and two other shows: Mic Check and Akandondolidoli.
In reality, we will have The Crackers and Spotlight comedians live on stage, not their recorded TV shows.
The other unheard reality is that there are not only kings, but a few queens too. Although The Crackers can only offer one female comedian, Fun Factory and Spotlight have a fair share of women in their groups.
From Amarula Family, only Amooti is going to present throughout the three days. It is a big task ahead of him, coming as a stand-up comedian. He will soon discover that it can get very lonely when you have to stand on the stage without support by other actors. Hopefully his cross dressing will come to his rescue, if not, we hope the Theatre La Bonita audience that keep shouting insults and suggestions to the stage will support him.
We have always had comedians as MCs for such comedy shows, however, radio presenter, Flavia Tusiime, takes over this time. Chances are high that after the three shows, we shall not remember that she ever stepped onto that stage. This crop of comedians is likely to dwarf any MC whose forte is not bouncing jokes off their lips.
