A total of 11 people perished in separate incidents in the country on Sunday as Christians celebrated Easter.

Among those killed were three children, two of them from the same family. They perished in a boat accident when it capsized on Lake Victoria in Jinja district.

They were part of about seven people, four from the same family, who were travelling by canoe from Wanyange to Wairaka beach in Kakira sub-county.

The deputy Police spokesperson, Vincent Ssekate, yesterday identified the dead as Maureen Kiiza, Rose Babirye, (both sisters) and Aramazan Muwada.

The Police said the boat was about 40 metres from the shore when it was hit by a wave, causing it to capsize. The incident happened at about 5:30pm. The Jinja deputy criminal investigations department boss, Michael Odoi, said the three were travelling with Mande Sselula, the boat owner and his family when tragedy struck.

Sselula, his wife and their two children were immediately rescued by fishermen who responded to their distress calls.

In another incident, the Police in Jinja on Monday morning recovered a body of an unidentified man who drowned on Easter Sunday in Lake Victoria.

The body was half-naked and had scratches and bruises around the neck.

In Lyantonde, an army officer, Col. Emmy Rwasande, reportedly stormed a local bar and put the owner at gunpoint before smashing items, including bottles of alcohol.

Rwasande, who until recently was the second in command of the Mbarara division before being recalled to Kampala, stormed the bar at night.

He allegedly drew a gun at Jane Mihanda for not supporting his brother in the LC5 race.

The incident caused revellers to scamper to safety. The Police yesterday said investigations into the incident had commenced.

“The woman filed a complaint and as such we are investigating the officer in connection with malicious damage of property and threatening violence,” William Mukirane, the head of Lyantonde Police Station, said.

In other incidents, two people were shot dead in two separate incidents.

One of the incidents occurred in Ibanda district, while the other was in Kampala.

In Ibanda, a guard attached to United Heroes, shot dead Edison Tumusime, a driver, who was having fun with friends at the Eden Cottages on Easter Day.

The 3:00am incident is said to have riled his friends who, according to the Police, torched the place.

The Police suspect that the guard identified as Justus Mukunde could have shot the deceased after a quarrel.

The Police is also investigating the circumstances under which the guard, who had been deployed at Rock Fuel station in the town, ended up at the bar that was being guarded by Benon Musinguzi.

The Ibanda Police boss, Richard Ecega, said both guards had been arrested in connection with the incident.

“Musinguzi will help with the investigations and tell us what exactly happened,” Ecega said.

In the Kampala incident, a guard attached to Detail Security, shot dead a porter at a construction site in Nakivubo.

The guard, whom the Police only identified as Twizire, reportedly shot Fred Eria in the stomach, killing him instantly.

The deputy Police spokesperson, Vincent Ssekate, said the incident occurred after midnight.

The Police said the incident was baffling, given that it happened when other porters were at the site.

Stone aggregate packed in a bag was found next to where Eria’s body lay, triggering off speculation that he could have been shot while trying to steal the building materials.

Moments after the incident, the guard is said to have vanished.

The Police said investigations into the matter were ongoing as they hunt for the guard.
