URA tactician Alex Isabirye firmly held his rosary throughout his side’s tense encounter with Police.
Eventually, that and a combination of tactics handsomely paid off as the tax collectors secured a 1-0 win over the Cops in their league duel at Namboole Stadium yesterday.

Moses Feni’s solitary strike saw URA tighten its grip atop the league table as close title rivals KCC were held to a barren draw by minnows Firemasters at Nakivubo.

Feni capitalized on Police defender Juma Waiswa and mid-fielder Nanik Muzamiru’s indecision to gain possession before slotting the ball past Police’s static goalkeeper Salim Sowedi on 54 minutes.

Feni, who had come on for Nasif Walukaga, was hardly three minutes on the pitch when he struck what turned out to be the winner with just his third touch on the ball. URA took their tally to 50 points, nine clear of KCC, who have two games in hand.

At Nakivubo, KCC’s Isaac Mugabi hit the cross-bar from the spot in the 12th minute after Ceasar Sapeo was brought down in the area.

In the second half, KCC stepped up their act but Andy Ssekayombya, Richard Malinga and Sapeo missed clear cut scoring opportunities. KCC enjoyed the majority of possession but were denied by Firemasters custodian Michael Zimula.

At Wankuluku, Proline had to play with a man less for 70 minutes after referee Ali Kalyango showed Razak Ewatu a red card for a wild tackle on Erukana Nkugwa.

Proline tactician Mujib Kasule was as a result forced to adjust to a defensive game with occasional counter-attacks. Ultimately, Proline managed to salvage a point.

Earlier in the game, Villa had come close to securing victory with three minutes to time. Denis Guma’s shot hit the cross bar and onto the line drawing cheers from the Villa bench that thought the ball had crossed the line.

Match referees Ali Kalyango and his assistants had to be escorted by riot police off the pitch as fans threatened to beat them up.
In Jinja, Eric Ssebuguzi struck a brace as Victors triumphed over Masaka 3-1.
