THE resident district commissioner of Alebtong district, George Ewai, has accused the police in Abako sub-county of demanding money to effect police bond and arrests.

Ewai said the Police ask for sh50,000 for Police bond and sh15,000 from complainants to arrest suspects.

He said he had received the complaints from the communities and was investigating the matter.

“Police bond is free and is a constitutional right. Whoever demands money to release a suspect commits an offence,” Ewai said.

He made the remarks on Wednesday during the handover of a truck given by the northern youth MP, Hamson Obua, to residents of Ajuri county.

The function was held at Amugu sub-county.

According to Ewai, suspects pay the money but the bond forms reflect ‘not cash’.

The officer in charge of Abako police station, Godwin Awio, said he had not received any complaint in relation to the allegations.

“Police bond is free but normally when releasing a person, the surety commits himself to paying sh50,000 or sh200,000 just in case the suspect disappears,” Awio told New Vision.

He said they usually ask complainants to hire a motorcycle and fuel it to transport Police officers going to carry out arrests because they do not have official means of transport.
