THE chairman of the Madhvani Group of Companies, Manubhai Madhvani, who died in London on Tuesday, is set to be cremated today.

A statement from the Jinja-based Kakira Sugar Ltd, where he has been one of the three joint managing directors, said the cremation would be held at the Golders Green Crematorium, West Chapel in London.

The family will then embark on arrangements to fly his ashes to Uganda on a later date.

Manubhai, who was born, raised and educated in Jinja before taking control over the business empire of his father and Ugandan business icon, Muljibhai Prabhudas Madhvani, died at the age of 81, following a brief illness.

“Under the Hindu custom, the ashes will be immersed in a Holy River (River Nile) and as per the desire of Manubhai, some of the ashes will be (placed) next to his father, the late Muljibhai Madhvani, and late brother Jayant Madhvani in the family’s private Samadhi in Kakira,” the statement read.

Special prayers have also been arranged at the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Neasden in London for Friday evening.

Leaders in Jinja have mourned the passing of Muljibhai described as a useful elder.

“Manubhai and the Madhvani family have made numerous contributions to this town and its residents, said Jinja municipality mayor Mohammed Kezaala.

“On many occasions, especially in December, Manubhai himself has been giving me assorted items to distribute to the elderly and disadvantaged people for use over the festive season,” Kezaala added.
