Dear NZ,
By first sexual experience, I am assuming you had penetrative sex.

For a man, you may get pain because of being unaccustomed to the exercise of sex, especially if you are not physically fit. It should wear off in a few days.

For a lady, things are different.

During sex, bacteria can be forced up into a woman’s urinary bladder. This leads to urinary tract infection (UTI). Symptoms include pain on passing urine, passing urine frequently, back pain and others. UTIs are easily treated with antibiotics, so you should see a doctor about it.

We do not consider this UTI as sexually transmitted. But, it is related to sex. It can be prevented by making sure that a woman passes urine immediately after sex.

Another cause of pain may be a sexually transmitted disease, infection of the tubes called PID. This may come with pain in the back, and a vaginal discharge. Again, your doctor can help with treatment.

I have a smelly discharge

Dear Dr,
I am 25. I have had a fish-like smelly vaginal discharge for over five years. It makes me uncomfortable. What can I do?

Sheila

Dear Sheila,
Vaginal discharges are a very common problem. The most common one is candida, which is due to a fungal infection. In this, usually there is itching and the discharge is white, like bad milk.

The other common discharge is like the one you are talking about. It is thin, like water and smells like fish. The smell may increase considerably after sex.

This is called Bacterial Vaginosis. It is treatable with a combination of antibiotics.

Other causes of discharge include Trichomonias, which is a sexually transmitted infection.

Any vaginal discharge may make you quite uncomfortable. It has lasted a long time, but it can be cured. Please see a doctor about it. The doctor will listen to you, examine you, make a diagnosis and give you treatment. This problem can be dealt with.
