IT was a moment of sorrow as the low and mighty gathered at the Sanatan Dharam Mandal temple in Jinja town to pay tribute to Manubhai Muljibhai Madhvani.

Manubhai, the chairman of the Madhvani Group of Companies, passed on in London last week after a short illness.

He was the joint managing director for Kakira Sugar Works.

His remains will be returned to Uganda at a later date.

Members of the Indian community in Jinja organised a special service on Sunday, which turned emotional when the Government Chief Whip and MP for Butembe county, Daudi Migereko, shed tears uncontrollably.

The Madhvanis are based at Kakira in Butembe county, in Jinja district.

Migereko spoke of his profound memories of Manubhai, describing him as an agriculturalist, industrialist, entrepreneur, business leader and a man of great foresight.

“We thank God for the life of Manubhai. He transformed the lives of many people in Uganda,” Migereko said.

He also delivered a condolence message from the NRM party secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, who hailed Manubhai for contributing to the Prosperity for All Programme and creating employment opportunities for Ugandans.

“He has been at the forefront of ensuring prosperity. The National Resistance Movement deeply regrets the departure of a dynamic and self-driven enterprising man,” Mbabazi said.
