SEVEN civil servants in Jinja municipal council have been interdicted over alleged financial mismanagement.
The culprits include three chief finance officers, three commercial officers and an accounts assistant from the three divisions of the municipality.
The chief financial officers include Alex Kiwanuka, the Mpumudde/Kimaka division chief finance officer, Majja Luvunia from the central division, Catherine Nawaguna from Walukuba/Masese division and Peridah Kasiko, an accounts assistant of central division.
The commercial officers are Cosmus Nankongo, the in-charge of Walukuba/Masese division, Sarah Babyerabira from Mpumudde/ Kimaka division and Rogers Kubwoyo of the central division.
Jinja town clerk Francis Barabanawe said the officers were interdicted to pave way for investigations.
He said Rexon Kidoma, a former senior town agent, who had earlier resigned to join politics, would be investigated over allegations that he was a signatory to an illegal account, which was used to draw money from various revenue centres.
Barabanawe told New Vision that the council had lost about sh500m in the fraudulent deal.
A recent internal audit report pinned the suspects over gross financial loss in terms of revenue to the council. They are expected to give their defense in 14 days.
The report indicated that the victims fraudulently opened up a savings account number 1631100000269 in Post Bank in the names of Jinja municipal council.
According to the report, they banked large sums of money collected from various revenue sources on the said account instead of the council collection account.
The embezzled money accrued from hotel tax, licenses and property rates from July 2008 to February 2011, according to the findings in the report.
