The newly-sworn in Lyantonde district chairperson, Fred Muhangi, has urged residents to work hard in order to develop the district. Muhangi said he was worried about residents who shy away from work.

“Why do you leave people from other parts of the country do the work that you would have done to get money?” he asked. Muhangi was on Tuesday addressing supporters who turned up for his swearing-in ceremony.

The Masaka chief magistrate, Sarah Mponye, presided over the function at Lyantonde district headquarters.

Muhangi who was the vice-chairperson during the last term of office beat his boss Fred Nayebare Kyamuzigita in both the NRM party primaries and general elections.

After swearing-in, Muhangi named his executive committee. The members include Faustine Kachagati Nkunda (vice-chairperson), Robert Mwesige (secretary for works), Sulaina Nakibuuka (secretary for community service) and Herbert Rweshehe (secretary for production).

He promised to put emphasis on education and vowed to cause the arrest of any teacher, head teacher or parent who will behave in a way contrary to the by-laws and the wellbeing of the pupils and students

“I was the vice-chairperson and the secretary for education during the previous term. I designed by-laws concerning this department and this time I have come to enforce them,” Muhangi said.

He added that he designed the by laws amidst criticisms and threats that he would not be re-elected to the council.

Muhangi thanked the residents for ignoring such threats and promoting him to a higher office. The resident district commissioner, Aida Bikorendwa, warned civil servants against turning down her surmons.

“Many of you have a habit of declining to respond when I call you to my office but you must know that I am the head of security in Lyantonde and the President’s representative,” she said, adding that she would arrest any one who disobeys her orders.
