The East African Community council of ministers has set the July 1 for the implementation of Lake Victoria Management and Transport Act of 2007.

The law provides for a joint commission to regulate maritime safety on Lake Victoria shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The law enacted by the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in 2007 seeks to streamline the registration and licensing of vessels on the Lake Victoria.

These, among other issues include the safety of passengers, cargo, and the competence of vessel crew among others.

Patrick Sanya, the Commissioner, transport regulation in the ministry of works and transport explained that the operationalization of the law delayed because the member states were sensitizing the concerned stakeholders.

He revealed that Uganda has already responded by rehabilitating of the grounded Marine Vessel (MV) Pamba, Kawa, the Dry Dock at Port Bell and plans are underway to retrieve the submerged MV Kabalega in 2005.
