JINJA mayor Muhammed Baswale Kezaala has vowed to fight corruption in the municipal council which he described as rampant.

Speaking after swearing-in for a second term in office at the mayor’s gardens on Tuesday, Kezaala said a lot of money meant to fight poverty among residents was being swindled by selfish individuals.

He cited a case in which seven civil servants in the council were recently interdicted after an internal audit pinned them for gross financial mismanagement.

The group including three division chief finance officers allegedly opened fraudulent savings accounts in the names of Jinja municipal council through which they stole funds.

“Sh300m was stolen using one of the accounts while there are reports that sh800m could have been embezzled using another account,” Kezaala said

He, however, blamed the mess on his removal from office by the Inspector General of Government in 2009 over alleged abuse of office.
