ANNET Negesa qualified for the Daegu World Championships in style, bringing to 10 the number of athletes that have made the mark for the biennial event.

Negesa came third in the women 800m of the IAAF Grand Prix in Hengelo, Netherlands, in a time of 2:00.40, inside the qualifying mark of 2:01.30 for the South Korea games due August this year. In the process, the 19-year-old broke the 20-year standing national record of 2:00.88 set by Edith Nakiyingi in Italy on July 7, 1990.

Negesa, who had been entered in the 1500m event, was shifted to her favourite 800m late and she never disappointed. Against seasoned runners that included winner Briton Jenny Meadows and Emma Jackson and Russia's Yuliana Rusanova, Negesa kept in the top pack until the last 200m when Meadow surged forward to sprint.

Negesa hung on but Jackson, with advantage of her long strides, took second position coming 16 microseconds faster than Negesa.

“It was a good race. She is improving fast and with better exposure and training, she will challenge the world’s best,” said her manager Jurie Van der Velden.

She becomes the tenth Ugandan to qualify for the championships after Moses Kipsiro, Moses Kibet and Abraham Kiplimo (5000m), Benjamin Kiplagat (3000mSC), Sarah Nambawa (triple jump), Jacob Araptany (1500m) and Daniel Chepyegon, Stephen Kiprotich and Nicholas Kiprono (marathon).

Local athletics body secretary Beatrice Ayikoru said that those who have qualified will convene for a training camp, and the best will make the team to South Korea for the global championships.
