THE delay by the leader of opposition, Nandala Mafabi, to release the shadow cabinet has irked some opposition MPs.

The MPs, who spoke to New Vision, said the delay was unacceptable given the fact that the reading of the national budget is just a few days away.

Sources, however, said Forum for Democratic change (FDC) leader Dr. Kizza Besigye had released the list to Mafabi before he travelled abroad.

Sources said the delay was due to disagreements among FDC members over some positions.

By the time we went to press, FDC top brass, including Sam Njuba and Augustine Ruzindana, were still holed up in a meeting trying to ‘polish up’ the list and come up with a final one.

Christine Abia said she was disappointed by the delay because the list should have been out by now.

The shadow ministers, she said, had to understand what was going to be in the budgets for their respective sectors so that they can make alternative budgets.

Party spokesperson Wafula Oguttu said the shadow cabinet would have to go to the national executive committee before it is released.

President Museveni of the ruling NRM recently named his cabinet and vetting of his nominees starts today.

Sources said Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu had been appointed new Attorney General in the shadow cabinet. Katuntu replaces former Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago who is now Kampala Lord Mayor.
Sources also said Abia had been named the chairperson of the committee on commissions, statutory authorities and state enterprises, while Jack Sabiiti was the local government minister.

Kaps Fungaroo was named defence minister, Hussein Kyanjo (Jeema), internal affairs minister and Okupa Elijah, parliamentary commissioner.

Kassiano Wadri, the former opposition chief whip, was named chairperson of the public accounts committee to replace Mafabi.

Different political parties represented in Parliament had also submitted nominees to the cabinet. Sources said Suubi group had named Merdard Sseggona as attorney general.

Other names that had been submitted included that of Ken Lukyamuzi (CP), Betty Nambooze and Richard Ssebuliba Mutumba.
