RUGBY Cranes head coach Yayiro Kasasa will not let a negative thought cross his mind despite seven of his players paying attention elsewhere.
The Cranes are currently preparing for the 2011 Africa Cup Group 1 B tournament that kicks off on June 12 at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
The event is the second group of the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) first division competitions comprised of Uganda, Ivory Coast, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
Andrew Olweny, Ronald Adigasi, Ronald Musajja, Denis Mullo, Justin Kimono, Timothy Kabonero and Paul Kabazzi have had to make time for both the Cranes and the Rwenzori which is still competing in the Bamburi Super Series that end this Saturday in Nairobi, Kenya.
Despite the distraction, Kasasa is focusing on the positive side of the situation.
Rwenzori takes on Sharks in a third place playoff for which Ksh300,000 (Ush7.5m) is at stake.
“They managed to spare time to be with us for a number of days which is okay. They are also playing rugby there only that there is need to train together as a full squad which will happen next week,†Kasasa argued.
Due to the security situation in their country, Ivory Coast pulled out of the Africa competition prompting a change to a round-robin tri-nations format.
All games will be at Kyadondo with the opening game between Uganda and Zimbabwe on June 12. Zimbabwe will then play Madagascar on June 15 and the tournament will wind up with Uganda facing Madagascar on June 18.
The winner with the highest number of points will be promoted to Group 1A. Currently, Group 1A consists of Namibia, Tunisia, Morocco and Kenya in that order in rankings and will play their tournament in Nairobi in November. The last team in IA will be demoted to Group 1B.
Meanwhile, the local rugby governing body –URU has appointed U-19 national 15s team coach Brian Makalama as acting coach for the women’s team preparing for the Elgon Cup.
Makalama will prepare the team for the competition set for next month.
“We have appointed Brian Makalama as acting women coach to make sure that he assembles a strong side and am optimistic he will be coming with the players shortlist,†rugby manager Kasasa confirmed.
At the same time, Kenya started training last week in readiness for July internationals against rivals Uganda in the Elgon Cup.
Kenya head coach Sammy Kemmey said that his focus is to win home and away against Uganda.
