Jackfruit is one of the biggest and most impressive fruits grown in most tropical countries. It is the national fruit of Bangladesh. Recently it has become a popular cash crop in Uganda, especially in Busoga region where it does very well. In other parts of the country jackfruit population is steadily dropping down as people cut it down to make charcoal. The jackfruit is the largest edible tree-grown fruit. The fruit is unusual as it is borne on the main branches and the trunks, occasionally even from surface roots of the tree. Within the fruit is a fibrous material called the rags. Embedded among the rags are numerous arils, the golden and richly flavoured flesh of the jackfruit. Within each aril is a seed. Seeds are surrounded by a tough skin. The seeds are edible and nutritious. They contain 38% carbohydrates, 6.6% proteins and 0.4% fats. Many recipes can be prepared from it.
