FOUR men and a woman, Constance Tushabe alias Grace Karungi, have been sentenced to death for killing a British national, Allan John Humphreys.

Tushabe was convicted together with Muhammad Kondolo alias Nanani, Abdu Bukenya, Saad Nyango and Ismail Ssebandeke, for murdering her lover, Humphreys.

According to the evidence, Tushabe and Humphreys lived as man and wife at Kiwafu estates in Kansanga for a long time and, at one time,
worked together at Pepsi Cola Company, where he (Humphreys) was a sales executive.

Tushabe and Humphreys also ran a pub in Kisugu-Namuwongo, a Kampala suburb.

Justice Joseph Murangira of the High Court said as he handed out the judgment to the convicts, agreed with the submissions of the Principal State Attorney, Betty Khisa, that no doubt Tushabe’s defence had implicated her into the conspiracy to murder Humphreys.

“I agree with the prosecution and the assessor that the prosecution has proved the charge of murder against each of the five accused persons beyond reasonable doubt participated in the murder of Humphreys. Accordingly, each accused person is found guilty of the offence of murder and each is sentenced to death, Murangira ruled.

The prosecution had, during the trial, told the court that the four men murdered Humphreys at the pub he jointly ran with Tushabe, on the night of March 9, 2009 at Kisugu Central Zone in Makindye Division, Kampala district.

According to the evidence, the murder occurred following some misunderstanding between Tushabe and Humphreys. Tushabe was said to have had an extramarital affair with Kondolo, one of the convicts.

According to Tushabe’s evidence, despite the fact that she loved Humphreys, she just looked on as his attackers battered him in front of their pub across the road on the fateful day.

She also admitted that she did not even go anywhere near where he lay in a pool of blood after the attackers had left him, neither did she visit him at Mulago Hospital where the Police had rushed him to save his life.
