THE Police in Bulambuli district are holding 19 people for allegedly taking part in tribal clashes between the Bagisu and Shana.
Two men were injured in the fracas.

One of the victims, Samuel Komomo Chepskor, 40, sustained a fracture in the left leg and wounds. The other victim, Michael Mwanga, 31, was cut on the head.

Eastern region Police spokesperson Diana Nandaula said the Police had deployed heavily in the area.

She said the clashes stemmed from disagreements between the Bagisu and Shana over the Bulegeni town council boundary.

“While the Shana welcomed the creation of the town council, Bagisu did not and this has created tension between the two ethnic groups,” Nandaula said

The Police, Nandawula added, were liaising with Bulambuli district local government to find a solution.

Narrating his ordeal to New Vision on Thursday, Chepskor said he was going on with his work in Kapkwen Cell when a mob, suspected to be Bagisu, allegedly attacked him at about midday.

“The group, armed with pangas, clubs and iron bars beat me into unconsciousness. Luckily, a Good Samaritan rushed me to Muyembe Health Centre, where I was referred to Mbale Regional Hospital,” Chepskor said.

Peter Cheptai, A human rights activist, appealed for immediate intervention by Government to avert further clashes.
