INVESTORS in Uganda should work as ambassadors and promote the country among prospective investors, especially the conducive investment environment in the country.

The First Lady, Janet Museveni, said it was unfortunate that people only hear about the negative side of Uganda.

“Therefore, it is only those already doing business here that can dissuade the fears created in potential investors,” she said on Saturday while touring a new 150-passenger ferry, MV Amani, at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Hotel landing site.

The ferry will be operating on Lake Victoria.

The First Lady was guided around the ferry by the president of EarthWise Ferries, Rob Smith and other company officials.

Mrs. Museveni lauded EarthWise Ferries for the venture, which she said brings hope to Ugandans. She observed that the country had not had sufficient marine transport, adding that she hoped more people would invest in the sector.

This, she said, provide employment to Ugandans, increase economic activity, reduce transport costs and revitalise trade in East Africa.

Mrs. Museveni also encouraged the company to set up a plant to make boats locally.

Smith explained that the $3m MV Amani ferry was built in Seattle in the US by EarthWise and assembled in Uganda.

It has the first class and economy, fitted with state of the art navigational systems and communication equipment to ensure safety at all times and has two caterpillar engines that run individually.

Smith said the ferry is very fast and it takes between only 5 to 6 hours and 8 to 10 hours from Port Bell to Kisumu and Mwanza respectively.

Calvin Echodu, the EarthWise Ferries chief executive officer, said with the Government’s partnership and support they will build 10 in the near future.
