Dear Doctor,
Please describe clinical presentation of pulmonary tuberculosis for a man aged 45. Clarify the various processes you go through for diagnosis.
Peter

Dear Peter,
WHEN we realise that someone has signs related to pulmonary tuberculosis (TB of the lungs) or is at risk of getting the disease, we run numerous tests.
These include chest examination, sputum (mucus generated when one coughs) analysis and chest X-ray.

In people who are HIV-positive, the analysis can be negative, even if they have TB because their immunity is too low to fight back and show the bacteria in the sputum.

Lately, Uganda has begun computerised diagnostic and computer management because of multi-drug resistance of tuberculosis. International Hospital Kampala is piloting the scheme. You can contact them for more information.
