PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has advised North Kigezi Diocese Christians to shun politics and focus on improving household income.

“Politics should take a short time. Now that the elections have ended, go back to your homes and concentrate on improving your household income,” Museveni said.

He said it was the responsibility of religious leaders to educate and transform communities.

“About 85% of Ugandans are Christians. If the home income is improved, it will be good for the church,” Museveni added.

He made the remarks recently at the consecration of Rev. Patrick Tugume Tusingwire as the new bishop of North Kigezi Diocese.

Museveni donated a car to Tusingwire.

The President also thanked Tusingwire’s predecessor, the Rev. Edward Muhima for the good work done. Muhima had served for eight years.

Henry Luke Orombi, the archbishop of the Church of Uganda, led the service at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano.

Orombi advised the President to institute strict supervision of money allocated to the poor and to strengthen the fight against corruption.

Tusingwire, who vowed to observe the provisions and the laws of the diocese, was born in 1952 to Yeremia and Yudesi Karamu of Kyafoora.

He has been lecturing and doing pastoral work in various institutions and congregations.

Tusingwire is also the chairman of the East Africa Region and International Executive Committee Global Fellowship of the Christian youth.

He has a wife and four daughters. Tusingwire appealed to Christians and organisations in the diocese to work with him to foster development.

He pledged to support Rugarama health centre, in addition to promoting education and agriculture in the region.

George Katwesigye, the bishop of Kigezi Diocese, advised Tusingwire to be a good example by being faithful to his wife, helping others, being disciplined and hospitable.

Katwesigye also advised Tusingwire to be non-violent, approachable, not greedy.

Katwesigye said these are the qualities of a spiritual leader.
