Can’t there be love without material possessions?
How do you handle men who are so materialistic? Every man I have dated talks a lot about property, wealth and that kind of thing. There is a man I am currently seeing, but even before anything gets serious, he is already talking about buying land in my name.

I really get so disturbed; do they think that without such things we cannot go out with them? Can’t there be love without possession?

Dear Cissy
Love can be many things, but I wouldn’t say that love is all about material possessions. When you truly love someone, the best possession is the heart. True love is unconditional, with or without land or whatever possession, true love can exist.
When he offers to buy land in your name, does this make you feel overwhelmed or guilty? You indicated that nothing has been serious in the relationship, how long have you been together? Do you feel like he is moving too fast or do you feel like he is getting it all wrong? What is your expectation from the relationship? It is true that some people tie love to material possessions, because that is what they are made to believe. Sometimes men get overwhelmed with expression, especially when they find it hard to put it in words and they simply act. It may be one way of expressing his commitment to you in the relationship. However, if it makes you feel uncomfortable, it is okay to share with him how you feel. If he loves you, he will respect your opinion.
