THE ninth edition of the Adowa Memorial basketball tournament tips off tomorrow at Crane High School, Kitintale, a Kampala suburb.

National boys’ champions Mengo SS will face the stiffest challenge from rivals Buddo SS, St. Mary’s College Kisubi, St. Michael and hosts Crane High.

The tournament which is on the school basketball calendar is in memory of the deceased basketball legend.

“We have sent several invitations to schools in the country and we expect a big turn up,” said NASBA secretary Kigozi Kafumbe.

Adowa is remembered for having promoted basketball in schools especially in eastern and northern Uganda.

Born in Arua, Adowa was a renowned basketball player, coach and umpire before he passed on in 2002.

He was on the first national team that represented Uganda in the All Africa Games in Accra, Ghana in 1978.

He also played for Makerere University and was the first Ugandan to graduate as an international basketball referee.

Nabisunsa Girls that has dominated in this event will be defending the girls’ title, while hosts Crane High will be defending the boys’ accolade.
