THE Karimojong have been advised to provide for and monitor the developments of their children instead of encouraging them to beg on the streets.

The call was made by Karamoja affairs state minister Barbara Oundo Nekesa.

She was speaking at Pilas Primary School in Napak district on Tuesday during an event organised by Unicef to create awareness about the dangers of children growing on the streets
“Rural-urban migration could make the children adopt unhealthy habits that could destroy their future while on the streets,” she said.

Oundo identified some of the bad habits as alcohol abuse, prostitution and smoking.

It is noted that most of the children on the streets in Mbale, Busia, Jinja and Kampala are from Napak district.
Oundo asked parents to help the Government find measures to stop the vice.

Oundo, who was accompanied by other government officials, also met 66 former street children before visiting an early childhood development centre being managed by Building Resources Across Communities, a non-governmental organisation.
