STEALING textbooks by teachers and pupils not only demoralises donors and the Government, but also retards academic standards, West Buganda Diocese Bishop Godfrey Makumbi has said.

Speaking during the commissioning of a library at Tower Primary School in Kalungu district recently, Makumbi said some parents were involved in the habit.

“This is embarrassing. What should we do? Don’t you think our academic standards will continue declining?” he asked.

Makumbi urged parents to work with teachers to stop the vice.

The library was constructed by Just Care Foundation, a UK-based organisation.

The district inspector of schools, Keziron Kayinga, said some parents transferred pupils to other schools without returning textbooks to their former schools.

“The Government has a policy of handing over textbooks to pupils to take them home for revision to avoid incidences where thieves break into libraries and steal all the books,” Kayinga said.
