PEARL Leticia Mirembe is the winner of the first Spelling Bee Competition which was held at the National Theatre.

Mirembe, is a student of Kibuli Secondary School beat other participants from Uganda Martyrs’, Lubaga, Makerere College and Bethany College.

The highlight of the show was the intensity of the words participants had to spell. Words like Czechoslovakia, Swastika, picturesque, sagacious, paparazzo and vicissitude were spelled, among others.

The competition was on a knock-out basis – spell a word correctly, progress to the next round, fail a word, drop out.

Speaking at the function, Venansius Baryamureeba, the vice chancellor of Makerere University, said the competition aims at promoting talent and inspiring young learners to take a keen interest in the English language.

Victor Ayebazibwe, one of the founders of the initiative, said many learners fail exams because they lack the basics of the English language, which is the language of instruction.
