THE Police at Jinja Road Police Station yesterday arrested a motorist identified as James Magezi for knocking a police officer dead.
Ivan Bamwegobye, 29, was a Police patrol car driver attached to Jinja Road Police Station.
Magezi reportedly lost control of his vehicle near the Lugogo Police barracks on the Kampala-Jinja highway at 11:00am.
The officer-in-charge of traffic at Jinja Road, Francis Onen Lokwiya, said Magezi was arrested as he was leaving the scene of the accident.
Lokwiya added that when they subjected Magezi to an alcohol breathalyzer test, he was found to have excessive alcohol in his blood.
Lokwiya said while 0.35 was the acceptable content of alcohol for a private saloon driver, Magezi had 1.00 Blood Alcohol Content.
The Jinja Road Police criminal investigations chief said Magezi would be taken to Mulago Hospital for further tests to avoid doubt.
Magezi, a resident of Zzana on Entebbe Road, told the Police that he was a lecturer at Kyambogo University in the History department and was heading to campus.
Lokwiya said the accident occurred as the motorist drove from First Street in Industrial Area.
“The motorist lost control and the vehicle veered off the road. He knocked dead a pedestrian (policeman) and hit a road pillar, forcing the vehicle to overturn,†he said.
Lokwiya said officers who rushed to the scene arrested the motorist as he tried to flee. The smell of alcohol made the officers suspicious.
Colleagues removed Bamwegobye’s body. They said Bamwegobye was on sick leave after he was accidentally shot at Nakawa during the walk-to-work demonstration two months ago.
“He was shot in the shoulder by a colleague during a scuffle when the Police were dispersing protestors,†a workmate said.
The deceased will be buried in Kamuli. He is survived by a widow.
