The marriage many feared would not take place occurred against all odds. Singer Sophie Nantongo married her love, football coach Sam Ssimbwa at a heavily guarded function in Bakuli, Kampala.

The customary marriage was contracted after Nantongo introduced Ssimbwa to her parents, the official marriage ceremony in Buganda.

Ssimbwa, the legendary former Cranes winger is said to have had a troublesome love life, having lost his first wife, Samalie, to a top Kira Town Council politician in the late 90s. Samalie is currently living in Sweden. Another catch, a sports journalist, also left him to marry a sports official.

Meanwhile, Nantongo, the love science and tega akamasu singer, was one of Hajji Abdu Kagoma Mubiru’s four wives namely: Sarah of Mbikko (with five children), Josephine Nekesa (four children) and Alayisa of Jinja (two children).

She fell out with her husband last year in November and early this year, revealed to the press that life with Kagoma was hell. She said she had found a man who knew what love was, Ssimbwa.

Fears
The introduction ceremony has been anticipated for some time. However, two groups of people openly expressed dissatisfaction with the turn of events and vowed to stop it at whatever cost. The resistance was coming from both sides.

Nantongo’s story
Early this year, Sophie announced she was leaving her husband Kagoma. This followed the 2010 November incident in which Kagoma told journalists that he had caught her being unfaithful with one Shaban Nsubuga.

Nsubuga responded that Nantongo had been his girlfriend from their younger days and that he was actually preparing to marry her when, one week to their introduction ceremony, Kagoma snatched her from him and married her.

Nsubuga confessed that their love never ended. He claimed to have been sneaking into the Hajji’s home and even claimed Nantongo’s child with Kagoma was him.

Nantongo did not deny the allegations, prompting Kagoma to end the marriage and throw her out of his house. But when he heard that she was going to marry Ssimbwa, he demanded that Ssimbwa refunds the dowry he paid for Nantongo or else the function would not take place.

Ssimbwa refused and Kagoma vowed to stop the introduction ceremony.

Ssimbwa’s side of the story
Buganda Prince Ssimbwa also had challenges from his wife in Sweden, who has been threatening Nantongo. Ssimbwa’s children also vowed to block the marriage and actually approached the clan head, Prince Bamweyana of Kireka, for assistance.

The four children’s petition claimed Nantongo stormed their Bweyogerere mansion in Ntebetebe area, and threw them out of the home, accusing them of witchcraft.

They also accused her of stealing their father’s love from them. But Ssimbwa told the hastily convened clan meeting, that it was the malicious work of Kagoma, who was doing his best to disrupt their function.

Security measures
The original cards sent invited people to the home of Nantongo’s parents in Lweza, near Kajjansi. But at the last minute, the venue was changed to an enclosure behind Victorious Primary School in Bakuli.

People were unofficially informed and those who did not get the information, still headed to Lweza, only to be told to go to Bakuli. Security was tight at the venue with armed Police and kanyamas stationed within and outside the enclosure. Security at the two gates asked guests to identify themselves before they could be ushered into the venue. Those without cards had to call specific numbers to be given a password to enter.

The ceremony
The function was colourful and went without incident. Ssimbwa gave Nantongo’s parents impressive gifts, including two Friesian cows and goats and gave Nantongo a Toyota Regius. The ceremony was attended by many local artistes.

Nantongo was emotional throughout the function and at one time, shed tears of joy. She sang and danced but the most popular song was Super love, which she said she composed for Ssimbwa, the love of her life.

She has to pay back what I gave her for Hijja, says Hajji Abdu Kagoma, Nantongo’s ex
