KAGADI Secondary School in Kabarole district has been closed over a strike.
Heavily armed anti-riot Police on Thursday evening fired live ammunition and tear gas to disperse the students, who were protesting the transfer of their headteacher, George Musana.
Musana was transferred to Kaboyo Secondary School and was replaced by Joseph Kyomugisa. When Musana went to the school to handover office to Kyomugisa, the students turned wild and started hurling stones to other teachers and the Police, demanding that Musana be reinstated.
They also blamed the deputy head teacher, only identified as Ziwa, the bursar, Jude Bob, and the matron, Kabanyoro Yasinta, for mistreating them.
The students also expressed dissatisfaction over poor meals, corporal punishments, suspension of students and failure by some teachers to teach them.
Some teachers, the students said, had become arrogant.
“They can do whatever they want, including kicking students,†one student said.
He cited a geography teacher, whom he said had only taught twice since the term began.
“No one is attending to our problems,†the students told the Police.
They also called for the sacking of some non-teaching staff, whom they accused of mistreating them.
The officer in charge of Kagadi Police Station, Victor Nyamusesa, ordered for the temporary closure of the school until the issues raised by the students are addressed.
“We have received your complaints. We shall address them in consultation with the district leaders. For now, you are required to go home until you are called back,†he told the students.
