Pineapples The price of pineapples has continued to drop as the supply increases. By end of last week, the prices in Kampala markets had dropped by about sh400.
In Nakawa, Kibuye and Nakasero markets, a big pineapple was selling at sh2,000 from sh2,500. A small pineapple in Kibuye, Owino and Nakawa markets was selling between sh300 and sh500 from sh800 and sh1,000.
Watermelon The price of water melon has gone up again. A large watermelon which was selling at sh3,000 last month, rose up to sh5,000 by end of last week, an increase of about sh2,000.
In Nakasero, Nakawa, Owino and Kibuye markets, Ssali Muhamod, a watermelon trader in Nakawa Market attributed the rise to the increased water watermelon exports to the neighbouring Kenya, Rwanda and Congo and the high fuel cost.
Pawpaws The price of pawpaws remained high as the supply to the markets reduced.
In Nakawa, Kibuye, Kalerwe, Nakasero and Owino markets the price of a big pawpaw which was previously at sh2,500 now costs between sh3,000 and sh3,500.
A small pawpaw is now selling between sh800 and sh1,000 from sh500 during last year’s harvest season. A medium pawpaw in Nakawa, Kibuye, Kalerwe, Nakasero and Owino markets costs between sh2,500 from sh1,500.
Traders say the current price is a result of pawpaw shortage which started late last year. Traders believe this came about as a result of farmers switching from pawpaw growing to other crops after suffering heavy losses during the prolonged dry spell.
