Tell me more about Mucuna
Editor - I would like to thank you for the wonderful and important information you continuously give us. However, I would like to know more about Mucuna which I came across a few days ago. Is it in any way possible to explain it to me in Rutooro, the language I am comfortable with? As a farmer, I would like to enjoy the various benefits associated with this amazing crop.
Can you please direct me to where I can get some Mucuna seeds? Can you also tell me how much they cost?
John Apuuli
Editor’s NOTE: Much as farmers in Uganda have started to appreciate the value of Mucuna as a cover crop, organic fertiliser and animal forage, there is no established market for the plant seeds. However, you can try the various shops around container village, which stock agriculture inputs. You can also try Kawanda, Namulonge or any other agriculture research institute close to you. For more information on Mucuna, please read today’s crop profile Harvest Money.
I need advice on fish farming
Editor - I would like to start a fish farming project. However, I don’t have enough information on the subject! Roughly how much capital do I need to get started? What are the qualities of a good fish pond, which will ensure maximum production? If I don’t have flowing water in the pond, will my fish be at risk?
Nsereko Stephen Mujjigwa
Editor’s NOTE: What you need is a business plan for a fish farming project. Fish farming is a lucrative enterprise if you go about it the right way. But before you commit your resources, get a fish farming expert to assess the site, and help you to design an appropriate business plan, to guide you in your work. It is frustrating to invest money in a costly project, only to discover later that you have all along been doing it the wrong way.

Where can I get Macadamia seedlings?
Editor - Kindly advise me on where I can obtain macadamia seedlings to plant.
Edmund K. Bagumira
Editor ‘s NOTE: There is an association of Macadamia farmers headed by engineer Stephen Sematiko. They have an orchard and a nursery of Macadamia trees somewhere along Gayaza road. They will get in touch with you in due course, using your phone contact.
When is the right time to plant tomatoes, onions?
Editor - Thank you for the advice you always give us. I have benefited a lot from it. Kindly advise me on the right time to plant tomatoes and onions so that they are not affected by the rains in September and March.
Michael
Editor’s NOTE: If you are prepared to invest in an irrigation system, the dry season is usually the best time for growing vegetables like tomatoes and onions. During the rainy season there are many pests and diseases targeting your crops, so you have to spend heavily on regular spraying. Besides, everyone tends to start planting at the beginning of the rainy season, which means the crops will get ready at the same time leading to a glut on the market. To make money from tomatoes and other vegetables, you have to go for off-season planting.
