THE Police are hunting for the owner and the construction engineer of the commercial building that collapsed in Bukoto, a city suburb, on Monday evening.

Seven people were injured in the incident that occurred at about 5:30pm.

The Police said the two are wanted to record statements as part of investigations into the mishap blamed on poor workmanship.

Deputy Kampala Police spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi said investigations into the incident had moved to the scene with the Police picking samples of the debris for analysis.

Ssenkumbi said they would also investigate why the building was occupied while still under construction and whether the structure was approved.

However, Kenneth Magembe, a city engineer, explained that a structure still under construction can be occupied on condition that the occupied section has been inspected and a certificate of occupancy given.

The ground floor housed a wine shop, a Hot Loaf Confectionary, a furniture shop (Walnut Doors) and a restaurant (Peter Pan).

The deputy resident district commissioner in charge of Nakawa division, Monday Kintu, warned that developers who flout building procedures would be disciplined.

“The Government will not allow developers who think they will use the influence of “godfathers” to make unlawful developments that endanger the lives of other people,” Kintu said.

By yesterday, one of the seven injured people remained admitted at Mulago Hospital.

Vincent Mbuga, one of the victims, is said to have sustained deep cuts on the head.

The hospital spokesperson, Dan Kimosho, identified other victims treated and discharged as Iga Haward 10, Judith Mutegeki, 31 and Sam Khaloko, 29.

Others were Emma Alex, 20, George Lugega, 45, and Charles Bakatume, 21.
