NKUMBA Marines coach Timothy Odeke insists his side can still reach the FUBA men’s division one post-season.

The results, though, continue to paint a different picture and Sunday saw yet another dark stroke slapped on Nkumba’s playoff hopes following a 78-66 defeat by reigning champions Power.

Phillip Wakimwero dropped a game-high 23 points and Julius Lutwama added 14 for the Marines, who actually began well and went into the half leading 40-39.

But Power, led in scoring by Isaac Luggudde and Jimmy Enabu with 15 and 14 points respectively, stepped it up after recess and the Marines sank.

The university side were outscored 16-7 in the third period and 23-19 in the final to record their sixth defeat in nine regular-season games. No matter, Odeke remained defiant.

“I believe we can still qualify for the playoffs,” said Odeke. “Why would I be coaching if it wasn’t the case?”

The real question, however, is what price will Nkumba ultimately pay if they fail to lift their form. They certainly wouldn’t make it to the playoffs but the real worry is the two-time champions might also be relegated to the second division.
