Rugashari Secondary School in Kibaale district has been closed after a students’ strike. Rugashari becomes the third school in the district to be closed over a strike within two weeks.

The school was closed last week by Kibaale district Police commander John Jokuna Elatu. Elatu said they had arrested some students to help with the investigations.

It is reported that students destroyed laboratory equipment, documents in the head teacher’s office and mock examination question papers that they were bound to sit.

The students said they were dissatisfied with the mock papers. They complained that the mock questions were substandard and not worth the sh20, 000 that they had paid.

However, the school head, Richard Byekwaso, said students who did not want to sit the mock exams engineered the strike. “We had reported for duty as usual, but all of a sudden, the students turned rowdy chasing away the teachers,” Byekwaso said.

Witnesses said the strike was violent and paralysed business around the school.
